Colleagues, friends, and dignitaries gathered at the unveiling of the memorial stone to pay their respects to Sergeant Ratana. It marked four years since his untimely death, with Commissioner of the Met Sir Mark Rowley in attendance to honor the fallen officer. Justice Served for Sergeant Ratana
The unveiling of the memorial stone comes after Louis De Zoysa was found guilty of Sergeant Ratana’s murder in June 2023 and sentenced to a whole-life term. The tragic events unfolded when De Zoysa was arrested in September 2020 in London Road, Norbury, and taken to the Croydon Custody Centre. Despite a thorough search, officers failed to discover the gun hidden in a holster on De Zoysa’s person.
Sergeant Ratana was fatally shot by De Zoysa, with the first bullet striking him before a second bullet hit his thigh. Despite the grievous injuries sustained, Sergeant Ratana showed immense bravery and dedication to duty as he tried to contain the threat posed by De Zoysa. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, leaving behind a legacy of service and sacrifice that will never be forgotten.
The unveiling of the memorial stone serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day in the line of duty. It stands as a tribute to Sergeant Ratana’s courage, dedication, and selflessness, and as a symbol of the profound impact he had on those around him. The ceremony was a fitting tribute to a man who gave his life in service to others, and a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who protect and serve our communities.
